*Is the Statement “History Is Written by the Victors” a Fundamental One?*

Capt Mohamed Hassan Al-Taher

_Date: November 15, 2025_

Fundamental statements are often built upon conceptual neutrality, whereas non-fundamental statements tend to be biased or controversial.

In the realm of thought, statements are distinguished as either fundamental or non-fundamental:

– The former represent the pillars of rational understanding,

– While the latter provoke debate and interpretation.

This article explores the fundamental categories in logic and analyzes the criteria for their essentiality through the lenses of logic, law, and history.

*🧠 Fundamental Categories in Logic*

According to Aristotle, fundamental categories are divided into ten types, representing the highest genera that encompass all beings:

– *Substance*: That which exists in itself, such as “human” or “wood”

– *Quantity*: Like “line” and “number”

– *Quality*: Such as “whiteness” and “health”

– *Relation*: Like “fatherhood” and “ownership”

– *Place*: As in location

– *Time*: As in temporal context

– *Position*: Like sitting or standing

– *Possession*: Such as being armed

– *Action*: Like “cutting”

– *Passion*: As in being affected by an action

These categories are considered fundamental because:

– They are used to classify everything that can be said about beings,

– And they form the structure of logical thought.

*⚖️ The Statement Across Logic, Law, and History*

For a statement to be considered fundamental, it must meet the following criteria:

– *In Logic*: It should be comprehensive, indivisible, and used in constructing judgments and inferences.

– *In Law*: It must be normative, used to interpret legal texts and define rights and duties.

– *In History*: It should be explanatory rather than propagandistic, relied upon for analyzing events—not justifying them.

*🕰️ “History Is Written by the Victors”*

This statement is considered non-fundamental. Why?

Because it does not explain reality as much as it reshapes it through a unilateral lens:

– _Descriptively_: It suggests that the victor possesses the tools of narration and documentation.

– _Prescriptively_: It implies that historical narratives should be accepted as told by the victor, which is problematic.

– It provokes controversy by excluding the defeated from the narrative and legitimizing historical bias.

– It portrays history as a tool of oppression rather than documentation, stripping it of its humanistic and epistemic value.

– It is used in political or media environments to justify dominance, making it a calculated—not spontaneous—statement.

—

*🧩 Conclusion*

*Why should non-fundamental statements be critiqued?*

Despite their popularity, non-fundamental statements pose a threat to critical thinking because:

– They are built on emotion rather than reason,

– And are used to steer public opinion rather than understand reality.

Critiquing them restores the value of logic, liberates history from the grip of the victor, and rebalances the human discourse.

Thus, we conclude that the statement “History is written by the victors” is a call for balance—placing all data on equal footing in analysis.
