– *attitude*:

– *aptitude*

– *altitude*:

*The Sudanese Political Mental Age: Between Deferred Maturity and Chronic Childhood Narratives*

_By Captain Mohamed Hassan Al-Tahir_

_Date: December 3, 2025_

In the realm of politics, when comparing the age of nations to their modes of thinking, we find that a country’s age is not measured by the number of years since its independence, but rather by:

– The maturity of its collective political mind

– Its ability to produce rational narratives

– Its capacity to take balanced stances

– Its skill in presenting proposals that transcend emotional impulses in favor of strategic vision

Sudan, despite having passed more than six decades since independence, still oscillates between:

– Political childhood

– Revolutionary adolescence

As if its condition echoes the saying: “He joined the school after turning grey,” prompting the observer to ask:

—

*🧠 Is Political Maturity Inevitable?*

The relationship between a nation’s age and its political thinking is not necessarily linear. There are countries:

– Young in years but mature in thought

– Others over a century old yet still trapped in cycles of coups and instability

Political maturity does not come automatically with time. It is the product of:

– Accumulated experience

– Learning from mistakes

– Building institutions capable of managing diversity and contradictions

—

*🪞 The Paradox of “Biological Maturity and Infantile Thinking”*

The popular Sudanese saying “He joined the school after turning grey” aptly describes many political elites in Sudan:

– Advanced in biological age, yet their political discourse remains captive to emotion, slogans, and reactionary impulses

Is it true that “a person is hidden beneath their tongue”—revealed only through their speech?

Yes. The tongue reveals:

– The depth of one’s experience

– The ability to think critically, analyze, and express a balanced position that reflects sound judgment—not mere stubbornness or bravado

Those who parrot slogans without awareness expose an intellectual void that time alone cannot fill.

—

*🧭 Evaluating Elite Narratives: Biological vs. Mental Age*

When assessing the narratives of political elites and activists, we must distinguish between:

– Biological age

– Mental age

How often do we see a young person in their twenties offering mature insights, while an elder clings to shallow, unobjective narratives built on naïve scapegoating?

Thus, true evaluation must be based on:

– *Attitude*: One’s stance toward others, difference, the state, and the future

– *Aptitude*: Analytical competence, coherence in discourse, and understanding of complex realities

– *Altitude*: The elevation of one’s discourse above trivialities, and its ability to soar within the realm of strategic vision

—

*🧩 When Do We Say “May God Grant Him Wisdom”?*

We say it when we see someone who:

– Possesses tools of influence but lacks wisdom

– Leads the scene yet cannot distinguish between tactics and strategy, enemy and rival, or state and regime

– Holds a hostile *attitude*, weak *aptitude*, and low *altitude*, dragging the country into deeper confusion

At that point, we can only say, “Then let Abu Hanifa stretch his legs”—a Sudanese expression of exasperation.

—

*🔄 Is the Relationship Between Mind and Stance Direct or Inverse?*

In mature societies:

– The more developed the mind, the wiser the stance

But in the Sudanese context, we often see an inverse relationship:

– The louder the voice, the weaker the argument

– The greater the enthusiasm, the more absent the analysis

This compels us to reconsider who we allow to speak in the name of the nation.

—

*🧩 Conclusion: Toward Genuine Political Maturity*

Political mental age is not granted—it is earned.

If Sudan is to escape its recurring crises, it must redefine political maturity not as a matter of age, but as a system of values, skills, and attitudes.

It is time to move from “He joined the school after turning grey” to “May God grant him wisdom”—a mind that produces new narratives and lays the foundation for a different reality, one that silences every hollow orator.
