Is Sudan Becoming a Backyard?
Captain Mohamed Hassan Al-Tahir
Date: November 11, 2025_
Amid distorted concepts and a complex reality—where political terminology intersects with geostrategic conditions—a provocative question arises:
*Is Sudan becoming a backyard?*
This question opens the door to deep reflections on concepts, realities, and the fallacies surrounding public discourse about Sudan.
*🌍 The Term “Backyard”*
The term _backyard_ is used in political literature to refer to a country or region under the influence of a more powerful state, often without the genuine will of its people or leadership.
It is viewed as a vital area or sphere of influence exploited economically or managed politically to serve the interests of the dominant power—not necessarily its own.
In this context, the “backyard” state becomes a functional extension, not an equal partner.
*🧠 The Paradox of “The Known Is Unknown”*
The phrase “the known is unknown” reflects a cognitive paradox: Sudan, despite its rich history and abundant natural and human resources, is sometimes treated in international discourse as if it were obscure or marginal.
This contradiction raises questions:
– Is Sudan deliberately excluded from spheres of influence?
– Or are there fallacies contributing to its marginalization?
Sudan is not unknown—it is historically and culturally _known_. Yet the neglect or reduction it faces may be part of a process to turn it into a “backyard.”
*⚖️ Error vs. Logical Fallacy*
It is important to distinguish between an _error_ and a _fallacy_:
– An error is an unintended mistake in understanding or judgment.
– A fallacy is the deliberate use of misleading logic to influence or manipulate.
In Sudan’s case, much political and media discourse falls into logical fallacies such as:
– Overgeneralization
– Appeals to emotion
These produce a distorted image of Sudan’s reality. For example, portraying Sudan as a permanently failed state is an overgeneralization that ignores the complexities of its situation and reinforces the idea that it can only serve as a backyard to other powers.
Such discourse:
– Fuels interventionist policies
– Undermines Sudan’s chances of building genuine sovereignty
*🌱 Is Sudan on the Path to Becoming a Backyard?*
Sudan’s current reality—marked by war and destruction, even reaching the National Botanical Garden in Khartoum—reveals the fragility of its political and environmental structures.
But turning Sudan into a “backyard” is not an inevitable fate. It is a political choice shaped by both internal and external forces.
Resisting this outcome begins with dismantling fallacies and reclaiming Sudan’s narrative as a sovereign state—not merely a zone of influence.
*In Conclusion:*
Sudan is not a backyard.
It is a _front yard_ —a land of deep history, rich culture, and a people who deserve to be known and respected.
