*Observation and Political Change Blindness:
( A Total Absence of Vision or Temporary Circumstances? )
Capt Mohamed Hassan Al-Taher_
Date: November 20, 2025_
In the volatile world of politics, where events accelerate and interests intertwine, *observation* becomes more than a visual act — it is a tool of perception, awareness, and insight. This raises a critical question:
– What happens when observation disappears?
– Is it a complete absence of vision, or are surrounding circumstances obstructing our ability to see?
Here emerges the phenomenon of *political change blindness*, one of the most dangerous forms of perceptual blindness in the public sphere.
—
*🔍 Beyond Vision*
Observation is not merely the use of senses; it is a *complex mental process* involving attention, interpretation, and the linking of sensory inputs to meaning.
In politics, observation means:
– The ability to detect subtle signals,
– Reading between the lines,
– Understanding what is not said as much as what is.
*🎯 Sensory Crossfire and Politics*
Politics today unfolds in a space saturated with conflicting signals: statements, images, tweets, dramatic scenes, and rapid events.
In this *sensory crossfire*, observation becomes selective and may suffer from distortion or bias.
Here, the question is no longer “Do we see?”
– But rather, “What do we choose to see?”
– And who decides what we see?
—
*🕳️ Politics in the Gray Zone*
In this context, we encounter what can be called *”transmission or reception blindness”* — a concept that shifts depending on the situation:
– *Technically*: Sending information without confirming its receipt or understanding.
– *Militarily*: Issuing orders without knowing whether they were received or executed.
– *Metaphorically*: Making political decisions without genuine awareness of their impact or without effective communication with reality.
This leads to confusion between the street, the legislator, and the legislative project.
– Leaders may speak without listening, or issue decisions without receiving feedback from the public.
– The public may act, but their messages fail to reach decision-makers.
The result is *transmission and reception blindness* in its clearest form — inevitably leading to *change blindness*.
*🧠 When We Fail to See What’s Changing Before Us*
*Change blindness* is a psychological phenomenon where a person fails to notice clear changes in their environment, especially when they occur gradually or during distraction.
In politics, this means that *radical transformations may occur without being noticed by the public or elites*, simply because they were not paying attention.
– Laws may change,
– Freedoms may be eroded,
– Public discourse may be reshaped —
All happening before our eyes, yet we fail to see it. Not because we lack vision, but because we have lost *attention, sensitivity, and alertness*.
*⚖️ The Political Awareness Cycle: Between Stimulus, Influence, and Response — Through Wakefulness and Sedation*
Politics does not operate in a vacuum, but in a *continuous dynamic* between:
– *Stimulus and response*: Do we react to events, or are we being lured into them?
– *Awareness and influence*: Are we aware enough to influence what’s happening, or are we trapped in a cycle of reactions?
– *Wakefulness and sedation*: Are we in a state of critical awareness, or are we sedated by comforting or distracting rhetoric?
Do we truly see?
*✨ In the End*
Opening our eyes is not enough to see. Political vision requires *conscious observation, constant alertness, and the ability to cut through the noise*.
Political change blindness does not strike suddenly — it creeps in quietly, exploiting our distraction, confusion, or even our overconfidence.
The real question is not:
– Has vision disappeared?
– But: Have we allowed circumstances to make it disappear?
