A Reflection on the Path of Civilizational Maturity (Societies and the Six Diseases: Similarities and Differences)

Captain Mohamed Hassan Al-Taher

In a world where the pace of change accelerates rapidly, the need arises for a deeper understanding of the nature of societies and the trajectories of their development.

Among the concepts that illuminate this understanding is the notion of the “six diseases”—ailments that afflict humans in childhood but extend metaphorically to represent the afflictions that strike societies in their early stages, influencing their path toward civilizational maturity.

The Six Diseases

The “six diseases” refer to a set of psychological and behavioral disorders that can affect individuals from early childhood, impacting their mental, emotional, and social development. These diseases are:

1. *Excessive selfishness*: The child sees the world only from their own perspective and struggles to recognize others’ needs.

2. *Fear of the other*: An instinctive fear of difference, which may evolve into hostility or rejection.

3. *Dependency*: A tendency to rely on others for decision-making and responsibility.

4. *Impulsiveness*: Acting without thought or planning, driven by emotion or immediate desire.

5. *Self-centeredness*: Believing the self is the center of the universe, expecting everything to revolve around it.

6. *Deficiency in critical thinking*: Weak analytical ability and a tendency toward blind belief or conformity.

If not addressed early, these diseases may become ingrained in personality and affect both the individual and society at large.

Societies and the Diseases: Similarities and Differences*

Just as individuals suffer from these diseases in childhood, societies also pass through a phase of “civilizational childhood” marked by similar traits:

– *Collective selfishness*: When a nation sees itself above others and adopts exclusionary rhetoric.

– *Fear of other cultures*: Leading to isolation and rejection of diversity.

– *Dependence on external powers*: In food, technology, and even in shaping future visions.

– *Political and economic impulsiveness*: Making critical decisions without long-term planning or study.

– *Ethnic or sectarian centralism*: Prioritizing narrow identities over the public good.

– *Weak collective critical thinking*: Opening the door to myths, conspiracy theories, and extremism.

Unlike individuals, however, societies can reshape their collective consciousness across generations—either progressing from childhood to maturity or stagnating in immaturity, aging before they ever mature.

*🏛️ Civilization: From Childhood to Old Age*

Civilization is not a moment but a long process of accumulation and interaction.

Civilizations begin in childhood, dominated by instincts and emotions, then gradually mature through experience, reaching peaks of creativity and prosperity. But if childhood diseases are left untreated, a civilization may enter old age prematurely and begin to decline—as has happened to many throughout history.

📏 Measuring Civilization: Resistance to Childhood Mental Diseases

Civilization is not measured solely by infrastructure or technological advancement, but by a society’s ability to overcome the mental diseases of childhood:

– Can its individuals think critically?

– Do they accept those who are different?

– Do they take collective responsibility?

– Do they plan rationally for the future?

The stronger a society’s immunity to these diseases, the closer it moves toward civilizational maturity—and the more successful it becomes in the battle for renewal and survival.

🔄 The Battle for Survival: Stagnation or Renewal?

A society that fails to renew itself, review its ideas, or treat its ailments enters a state of stagnation akin to chronic illness.
