Othman and Azmi, I understand you.. _The State and Politics: Between Order, Discipline, and Play Captain Mohamed Hassan Al-Tahir

At the heart of every organized society stands the state as a unifying entity, politics as a guiding tool, and play as an indispensable human outlet.

This triad— *state, politics, and play* —may appear disparate on the surface, but at their core, they are deeply interconnected:

– Together, they shape the contours of public life,

– And determine how individuals live and interact within the shared space.

—

*What is the State?*

The state is a sovereign political entity composed of four essential elements:

– _The people,_

– _The territory,_

– _The government,_

– _And international recognition._

It is not merely a geographical boundary, but a legal and institutional system that organizes individual lives, ensures security, legislates laws, and manages resources.

—

*The Relationship Between Structure and Function*

If the state is the _structure_, then politics is the _soul_ that animates it.

Politics is:

The means by which the affairs of the state are managed—internally through legislation and regulation, and externally through international relations.

It is the art of _distributing power and resources_, balancing diverse interests, and ensuring societal stability.

– A state without politics becomes a rigid shell,

– And politics without a state becomes mere theorizing without implementation.

Their relationship is one of complementarity: the state provides the framework, and politics brings it to life.

—

*Politics and Discipline*

If we consider _discipline as the distribution of individuals across space_, then politics is the tool that organizes this distribution.

Through public policies, the state determines where schools are built, where factories are established, and where green spaces are allocated.

Politics here is not merely about authority, but about _social engineering_ —reshaping public space to achieve justice and efficiency.

Political discipline does not mean repression; rather, it means _organizing human presence in space_ in a way that ensures coexistence, prevents chaos, and enhances productivity.

*Are Entertainment and Leisure Spaces a Necessity or a Luxury?*

Entertainment spaces have long been viewed as luxuries, but human experience proves they are a _social and psychological necessity_.

Life is not built solely on work and discipline; it requires moments of rest and recreation. As the saying goes, “There is room for leisure in our religion… Send him with us tomorrow to frolic and play, and we will surely protect him.”

It is enough to recall the incident of the _Abyssinians playing in the Prophet’s Mosque ﷺ_, where the Prophet not only approved of their play but allowed Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) to watch. This reflects _Islam’s recognition of the importance of play and recreation_ in people’s lives—even in the holiest of places.

Thus, a state that neglects entertainment fails its citizens, because _recreation is not the opposite of discipline—it complements it_.

*The Golden Rule: The State Organizes, Politics Manages, and Play Balances*

The golden rule for articulating the relationship between the state, politics, and play can be summarized as follows:

> _“The state organizes space, politics manages distribution, and play restores human balance.”_

Through this lens, we understand that the state is not merely an authority, but a guardian of the human being in their entirety: body, mind, and soul. Politics is not just a struggle of interests, but a means to ensure dignified living. And play is not frivolity—it is a _human right_ that restores balance and empowers individuals to face life’s challenges.
