*Fregean Politics in Mathematics*

( _A Third Path Beyond Idealism and Empiricism_)

Captain Mohammed Hassan Al-Tahir

Date: December 15, 2025

Yesterday, Plato defined philosophy as a cave with an inscription at its entrance: “Let none but geometers enter.” Perhaps he was right—especially in today’s world where:

– Philosophy intersects with science,

– And knowledge intertwines with power.

From this perspective, mathematics emerges as an intellectual tool that:

– Goes beyond being a mere language of numbers and equations,

– And becomes simultaneously a philosophical and political arena.

This is evident in the project of _Gottlob Frege_, as presented by _Mohammed Mohammed Qassem_ in his book _“Frege: The Theory of Numbers Between Epistemology and Ontology.”_

*🏛️ How Is Politics Related to Mathematics?*

At first glance, linking politics with mathematics may seem odd. But upon reflection, we find that:

*Politics determines what is taught:*

– Mathematics curricula in schools and universities are shaped by educational policies that reflect the state’s orientation—whether rationalist or pragmatic.

*Mathematics is a tool of power:*

– It is used in economic planning, statistics, artificial intelligence, and even in shaping public policy.

*Philosophical choices in mathematics have political dimensions:*

– Adopting an idealist or empiricist view of mathematics reflects a stance on the nature of truth, knowledge, and the role of reason in understanding the world.

Thus, mathematics is not merely a neutral tool—it is a field where deep political and philosophical choices are manifested.

*➗ Arithmetic and Geometry: A Difference in Essence and Function*

Mathematics is traditionally divided into two main branches: _arithmetic_ and _geometry_, each with its own nature:

*Arithmetic:*

– Concerned with numbers and operations.

– Characterized by its abstract and logical nature.

– Closer to language and logic than to sensory experience.

*Geometry:*

– Rooted in space and extension.

– Relies on visual intuition and spatial experience.

– More closely tied to the physical world.

*Their relation to politics:*

*Arithmetic:*

– Used in _economic management, taxation, and population statistics_ —the tools of governance.

*Geometry:*

– Applied in _urban planning, infrastructure, and geopolitical mapping_.

Each branch of mathematics thus contributes to shaping policy and constructing social reality.

*📘 Epistemology and Ontology*

In his book, _Mohammed Mohammed Qassem_ presents _Frege’s_ project, which aimed to _rebuild arithmetic on strict logical foundations_, rejecting both empiricism and psychologism.

Frege believed that:

– _Numbers are not mental or empirical concepts_, but rather _objective logical entities_.

– _Mathematical knowledge is a priori_, derived from logic, not experience.

– _A number is a property of a concept_, not a material thing.

Frege merges:

– _Epistemology_ (theory of knowledge)

– With _ontology_ (theory of being),

To establish a vision in which mathematics reflects the logical structure of reality—not merely a descriptive tool.

—

*🧭 Transcending the Idealism–Empiricism Divide*

Through Frege’s project, politics can adopt a _third path_ that transcends the traditional divide between:

*Idealism:*

– Which sees mathematics as a purely mental construct.

*Empiricism:*

– Which views it as a reflection of sensory experience.

Frege proposes that:

Mathematics is possible because it is grounded in the logic of reality itself—not merely in our consciousness of it, nor solely in our experience of it.

This vision opens the door to educational and intellectual policies that:

– Embrace reason without denying reality,

– And rely on logic without neglecting the human dimension.

*✨ Conclusion*

Politics through mathematics is not merely about using numbers to govern—it is a _philosophical choice_ about the nature of knowledge and reality. Through Frege’s project, we come to see mathematics not just as a science, but as a _language of being_. And politics that grasps this depth is capable of building:

– A more conscious individual,

– And a more rational society.

In an age where truths are contested, mathematics—when philosophically understood—remains a beacon of clarity and a bridge between thought and reality, lighting our path into the cave of philosophy.
