The Dynamics of Politics Between the Little Finger, the Index Finger, and the Thumb   Capt Mohamed Hassan Al-Tahir

Politics, at its core, is not merely the management of state affairs or the regulation of relations between ruler and ruled. Rather, it is:

– A symbolic, intertwined movement,

similar to the transfer of a signal from the thumb to the index finger and then to the little finger, where

– meanings are embodied in gestures,

– and symbols are reflected in practices.

The symbolism of movement from thumb to index finger to little finger:

– The thumb symbolizes strength and the ability to grasp things.

– The index finger symbolizes direction and pointing.

– The little finger symbolizes marginality and weakness.

The transition of movement among them reflects the dynamics of politics:

– From the strength of decision,

– to the guidance of direction,

– then to the marginalization of groups or issues.

This symbolism opens the door to a deeper understanding of the relationship between politics and social and intellectual reality, in the continuous interplay of disclosure and concealment in politics.

Just as the little finger hides in the hand what the index finger does not reveal, politics hides what it does not declare:

– Disclosure is the public discourse, while

– Concealment is what is managed behind the scenes.

Here emerges the duality of political practice between:

– What is announced to the people,

– and what is hidden in the corridors of the elites.

This leads inevitably to the question of the relationship between elite transparency and the flattening of the masses.

The index finger, when pointing, may give the illusion of clarity,

but the thumb remains holding the strings of the game.

Political elites often raise the banner of transparency, yet in reality they practice the flattening of the people, presenting facts fragmented or distorted. Citizens are deprived of depth and left with a shiny surface that conceals what lies beneath. This generates a paradox between the legality of decision and the legitimacy of direction.

– The thumb, when pressing, grants the decision its strength.

– The index finger, when directing, determines the path.

– Legality is derived from texts and laws, while

– Legitimacy is derived from the acceptance and satisfaction of the people.

Successful politics is that which combines both. It is not enough for a decision to be legal; the path must also be legitimate and acceptable to society.

The history of Sudanese political thought, through foundational narratives from generational struggle to democracy on the scales, reveals the intellectual content of decision-makers across eras, represented by the following symbolism:

– The little finger, despite its weakness, remains part of the hand, just as the voice of the individual remains part of democracy.

The balance of democracy rests on:

– Equality of voices,

– The ability of new generations to raise their fists (voices and protests) against marginalization.

Here arises the challenge: how do we balance the strength of the thumb and the dominance of the elites with the right of the little finger to express itself?

This is precisely where dialogue with the elite becomes necessary.

When disturbances and protests multiply, dialogue with the elite becomes a necessity, not a choice.

– The index finger may point to the people,

– but the thumb remains holding the decision.

If channels of dialogue are not opened, the political hand will lose its balance,

– and the little finger will become a symbol of suppressed anger instead of silent marginality.

Conclusion

Politics between the little finger, the index finger, and the thumb is not merely a bodily metaphor, but a symbolic reading of the relationship between power, direction, and marginalization.

It is a call to rethink how politics is practiced:

– To be truly transparent,

– Just in decision,

– Legitimate in path,

– Balanced in democracy,

– And open to dialogue with the people.

Thus comes reform, which must be the legitimate aim of the political actor who does not betray his people.
